Currently, the ACLU is tracking 351 anti-LGBTQ bills proposed by state legislatures across America. These bills will cause massive harm to the LGBTQ community. Some of these bills seek to undermine civil rights by weakening non-discrimination laws. Many of these bills attack healthcare, preventing access to Medicaid or Medicare, banning transgender care, and/or creating criminalizing facilities for providing this care. Other bills seek to prevent trans students from participating in school activities, force teachers to out LGBTQ students, and/or prohibit any in-school discussion of LGBTQ issues or people.

The governor of Tennessee is soon expected to sign a law banning transgender-affirming care and criminalizing drag performers. Even though Governor Bill Lee himself dressed in drag in high school as a yearbook picture of him wearing a very short skirt resurfaced.

Who is proposing these anti-LGBTQ bills?

Chrisitan conservative politicians are proposing these bills. Republicans are proposing these bills. The politicians that want us to believe they are followers of Christ and seek to force their religion into government, violating our first amendment right to separation of church and state. However, our constitution is of no importance to those that believe this nation is a Christian nation or should be.

Yet, are these harmful bills representative of Jesus Christ?

Not in the least. I am reminded of the story of Jesus’ washing the feet of his disciples, including Judas Iscariot, during his last night on earth. This story is found in the Book of John, Chapter 13. Jesus could’ve spent that time doing anything he wanted, yet, he chose to humble himself before a man he knew would betray him, resulting in his execution by religious authorities. Jesus went on to further explain to his disciples that he was setting an example for them to follow. The example is loving your enemies with unconditional love.

Judas was an enemy, and Jesus washed his feet.

Perhaps Christian conservatives should start washing the feet of the LGBTQ community instead of spreading hate, otherwise, their Christ is a monster, and simply a reflection of themselves and their hateful religion.
